From the One Year Bible this morning, Isaiah 41:25 reads:
I have stirred up one from the north, and he comes—
one from the rising sun who calls on my name.
He treads on rulers as if they were mortar,
as if he were a potter treading the clay.
Yes, it has happened before. No, that does not mean it’s over and done with. History, particularly biblical history, continues to ‘echo’. A preceding passage is interesting in light of the financial crisis, pervasive uncertainty and failed attempts at prognostication about what will happen to everyone’s primary ‘idol’: their money. Isaiah 41:22 reads:
Bring in your idols to tell us
what is going to happen.
Tell us what the former things were,
so that we may consider them
and know their final outcome.
Or declare to us the things to come,
A following passage is, well… interesting. Isaiah 42:6-9 reads:
I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness;
I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people
and a light for the Gentiles,
to open eyes that are blind,
to free captives from prison
and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
I am the LORD; that is my name!
I will not give my glory to another
or my praise to idols.
See, the former things have taken place,
and new things I declare;
before they spring into being
I announce them to you.
Ponder and pray… or ignore. Just don’t claim you didn’t know.
