Nice to see some honest, if slightly ‘gushy’* reporting on this. Finally. It’s a refreshing antidote to the demonizing caricatures and vitriol-filled, misogynist character assassinations that one would overhear multiple times per day in my zip code last fall.
One of the things you quickly learn when you visit the Palins is that the legend created around who they are and how they live is no myth. It appears to be absolutely real and everything about them seems 100% sincere. From the stuffed hunting trophies on the wall, to Track’s military photo by the TV set, to Piper’s crayon school projects on the refrigerator door – everything is exactly as you imagined.
…there was absolutely no reason for anything to be done differently as “show” for us. We saw the genuine Sarah Palin and it is patently obvious this is the only one who exists. She is the real deal…
I’ve interviewed a lot big-time “celebrities,” and can honestly say that even though you could argue Sarah Palin was the most prominent, she is also by far the nicest, most sincere and seemingly honest subject I’ve ever questioned.
*Those who would retort that ‘gushy’ disqualifies one from honest observation and reporting ought best to look very closely at, and therefore disqualify, the vast majority of mainstream media ‘news’ items before they single out this wee little piece to attack as ‘biased’.
Halfwise – yes. The ‘media’ is no longer mediating. They are actively screening for those that share their values. They know their own and their own know their voice.
One thing that got me excited about her (though hardly in the messianic sense that some have gotten excited about other pols!!) was the degree to which people with worldviews opposite to mine don’t just dislike or disagree with her… they despise her — viscerally and out of all proportion to what she actually says or does.
Some of the stuff that I heard firsthand coming out of the mouths of MDs, PhDs and others would not be fit to print. That hints to me that something much darker is animating these otherwise fair-minded people.

As a Canadian watching the US Presidential race from a certain detached distance I was disappointed in the treatment Sarah Palin got from so-called experts on both sides of the border. Seems to me she did not speak in the correct code words nor did she offer the vague blandishments of a professionally polished pol. as a result she got the “not our kind” sort of dismissal from the media that just infuriates me.
I thought her first speech was tremendous and then she faded. Would like to see her back in the spotlight again.
