Atlas is Shrugging

The following is notable not only for the close parallels with Ayn Rand’s classic tome, but for the direct tone that Reuters and other MSM outlets are beginning to take.

…a wave of energy companies has in the last few months announced plans to move to Switzerland — mainly for its appeal as a low-tax corporate domicile that looks relatively likely to stay out of reach of Barack Obama’s tax-seeking administration.

Playing this and other related issues forward, as individuals and corporations pursue courses of action that are only economically rational (in fact, their fiduciary duty), I can easily envision scenarios under which the administration gets testy, then bold, then unapologetically aggressive in closing off or dis-incenting such avenues (e.g., seizing or putting liens on fixed assets, selective taxes on ‘imports’ from these companies, legal and other hassles for American executives working for them, etc.). All of those potential reactive moves on the president’s part are inherently protectionist and authoritarian. Sadly, we know where that leads.

  1. Just dropped by for a visit. I continue to admire the breadth of subjects you address and the way in which you deal with difficult, pertinent issues. I believe it was Art Buchwald who once said: “If you’re gonna tell people the truth, you’d better make ‘em laff. Otherwise, they may kill you!” You tackle some tough matters and you don’t stutter!
    Thanks for your encouragement. don
