What a difference a few days makes…
James Kaiser of Bar Harbor was taking photographs when he heard shouts that people had been swept into the 55-degree water at the park’s Thunder Hole, a popular tourist attraction where waves often crash into a crevasse and make a thundering sound while splashing high in the air.
”I could see two people’s heads bobbing in the water,” Kaiser said. He said he thought they would be bounced back to shore because the waves were coming in so hard but that instead the current took them away from shore.
Just 72 hours before this happened, and virtually within sight of it, Sunny and I managed a nine-mile point-to-point open-water sea kayak that, at one point, had us two miles from the nearest shore. (Here’s another, more detailed ‘take’.)
The water was glass-smooth-beautiful and we took appropriate safety precautions, yet I’ll admit to some significant fear. What squelched it was my One Year Bible reading for the morning (which I prayed several times as we paddled) — Mark 4:36-41. Below: Sunny and yours truly depart…

Nice picture – 9 miles is a long way in a kayak. We have done 6+ mile paddles. The girls have an impex and wilderness while dh has an espirt. I use the old “party barge” – an old towne. Have you been in one of the sleeker boats – they really travel – the wilderness is a fast boat. (Mine is really slow – you have to muscle your way along – thus the feet up on the rail and the casual appearance while the rest of the family is cruising ahead. I’ve got the food . . . ).
Looks like you had a good time -
[Furthest we'd done before that was maybe three miles. Never been in one of the sleek/expensive ones. Ours is basically a bathtub that we take out every year or two. We had fun muscling it. I was pretty excited about getting it done in two hours flat. And yes, I'm a Type A.

It’s very sad when people are killed, but it is even more tragic when simple precautions – LIKE STAYING WELL BACK FROM GIANT WAVES – are not followed.
[Being a parent has given me great appreciation for how God must feel when we don't follow His simple instructions designed for our own protection. Simple precautions like "thou shalt have no other gods before me" or "thou shalt not kill"... stuff like that... signs in big letters that should be very clear.
