Scripture Without Elaboration — Saturday Edition

2nd KINGS 4:1 Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared YHWH, but the creditor* has come to take my two children to be his slaves.”
*[LXX: G1157, δανειστής, dä-nī-stā's; only other use in the OT in is Psalm 109:11]

LUKE 7:41 There was a certain creditor* which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? *[G1157, δανειστής, dä-nī-stā's -- only use in the NT]

2nd KINGS 4:2 And Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me; what have you in the house?” And she said, “Your servant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil.”

MATTHEW 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: 4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

2nd KINGS 4:3 Then he said, “Go outside, borrow vessels from all your neighbors, empty vessels and not too few.

MATTHEW 22:8 …’The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’

2nd KINGS 4:4 Then go in and shut [LXX: 'and lock'] the door behind yourself and your sons and pour*into all these vessels. And when one is full, set it aside.” 5 So she went from him and shut [LXX: 'and locked'] the door behind herself and her sons. And as she poured** they brought the vessels to her.
*[Greek: pour-out, spill, shed; also carries the connotation of breathing out]
**[LXX: G2022, ἐπιχέω, e-pē-khe'-ō]

MATTHEW 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

JOHN 20:19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

LUKE 10:34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring* on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. *[G2022, ἐπιχέω, e-pē-khe'-ō -- only use in NT]

MATTHEW 26:28 (see also Mark 14:24) …this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

2nd KINGS 4:6 When the vessels were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another.” Then the oil stopped flowing. 7 She came and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest.”

ROMANS 11:25 Lest you be wise in your own sight, I want you to understand this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved…

MATTHEW 25:1 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5 As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6 But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’

  1. Thank you for the post. It is one of the best that you have written.

    SIMPLE.

Oh man of God, pour out and fill the jars, pour out until nothing remains…….fill up the vessels.

Oh man of God, wrought Christ into your readers. Wrought the Father into all men. Behold the Lamb for He comes for His bride. Shiloh the Messiah will come after Sharon passes. Let the pastures of Sharon Kansas turn from the fields of Arabia (http://bible.cc/isaiah/33-9.htm) into the meadows of Samaria (http://bible.cc/isaiah/65-10.htm.)

Pour out Your Spirit oh Lord on Sharon. Bring forth thy oil into our land.

Make our hearts of flesh and change our hearts of stone.

  2. Well now we have it, the US is losing it’s strength/ power.

He has not only been tearing down the strength of others, his own country as well. By his own acts of sedition and lawlessness he is undermining governmental authority everywhere he goes.

Has it not been our Father in heaven who has allowed all these things.
Christ will have to be the one to intervene.

  3. The Armstrong motto is “Invictus Maneo,” which can be translated as “I remain unvanquished.”

Something just occurred to me. Lance Armstrong was stripped of all of his Tour de France titles due to “doping” last week. Neil Armstrong was stripped of his life this past week as well.

The name Armstrong is literally derived as “someone with strong arms”. Thinking about the Arab spring disarming strong leaders, thinking about the sudden destruction of the strong armed land of current day Babylon (U.S. ?). There’s something to this predictive prog.

[ART: Good observations, Shad. Thanks. Wikipedia notes that the full motto is "Vi et armis invictus maneo," which means "By the force of arms I remain unconquered," indicating one who is placing faith in the flesh -- in physical power, violence and military strength. It is a motto of defiance if not rebellion against the God who has said that man has strength only through Him.

The name Armstrong derives originally from one who carried armor for a Scottish king. In the context we're talking about (America) the question is: Which king is having his armor removed? And what kind of armor are we talking about? Scripture is of great help here.

We know that YHWH has a strong arm. For example, see:

Psalm 89:10 -- "Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm."

Jeremiah 21:5 -- "And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath."

Clearly, that is not the arm being broken in the parable of Lance and Neil! Instead, take a look at Isaiah 44:9-12, recalling the degree to which America has become a veritable idol factory (and idol exporter) --

All who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit. Their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame. 10 Who fashions a god or casts an idol that is profitable for nothing? 11 Behold, all his companions shall be put to shame, and the craftsmen are only human. Let them all assemble, let them stand forth. They shall be terrified; they shall be put to shame together. 12 The ironsmith takes a cutting tool and works it over the coals. He fashions it with hammers and works it with his strong arm. He becomes hungry, and his strength fails; he drinks no water and is faint.

Water, throughout scripture, is symbolic of the Word of God; e.g., see Amos 8:11, John 4, Ezekiel 47, Revelation 22, etc. Note also in connection with the unprecedented U.S. drought. In other words, this is a picture of someone (or a nation) not relying on the spiritual armor available to us in Christ, as spelled out in Ephesians 6, but on their own idolatrous armor instead.

Ezekiel 30:21-22 also highly instructive in this context.

"I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and behold, it has not been bound up, to heal it by binding it with a bandage, so that it may become strong to wield the sword. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt and will break his arms, both the strong arm and the one that was broken, and I will make the sword fall from his hand."

Recall how closely BHO was associated with Pharaoh by his supporters on his Egypt trip, the 'coincidence' of the Egyptian god of death, Anubis coming into NY harbor on the day that 'deathcare' legislation was signed, and how instrumental this administration's foreign policy has been in enabling the so-called 'Arab Spring' in Egypt and elsewhere, and the Islamization and threat to Israel which has come with it. So yeah, I think there's something to this one...]

  4. There is something of significance about the shutting and locking of the door.

Reading on in 2 Kings 4:32
32 When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. 33 So he went in and shut the door behind the two of them and prayed to the Lord. 34 Then he went up and lay on the child, putting his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands. And as he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm. 35 Then he got up again and walked once back and forth in the house, and went up and stretched himself upon him. The child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

Something gets closed out and something gets closed in. At the same time at the same door.

[ART: Yep. And another thing (occurred to me during worship this morning)... the buying and selling of oil may have to do with giving our lives. I.e., in giving our lives to Christ, we receive His Holy Spirit (as symbolized by the oil). Since we were going to die without it, what's the loss? (Both of the oil scenes -- one for Elisha and one for Elijah -- take place during a time of famine.]

  5. Every time the bridesmaids parable comes up among certain Christians, they always (as they do with the talents [money not Gifts]), think of money thereby justifying why they have what they do; some or much of it In an earthly storehouse.

Rather than using it for what our heavenly Father intended (that is why He gave it to them), they use it to buy worldly “stuff” to make their life as comfortable (suffering, what suffering?) as possible and so they will appear as the rest of the world.

The point is that no one likes to stand out, unless it is to bolster their own image. Neither do Christians like to stand out, be singled out. But this completely and totally blocks their full access to Christ and His working through us; as does building our treasures on earth.

There are a multitude of scripture to back these.

Jesus warned us not to build our treasure here on earth, not only to teach us that this woe is not our home, but to keep us from the love. Of money.

It is not our job to judge or condemn. That is up to Holy Spirit. But take a look around your environment. What do you see? Is your house too large for the number of people living in it? How much did you pay for your vehicles and what was the motive behind that purchase? Do you have “stuff” that merely sits around most of the time and really isn’t that functional for living in an alien world?

Americans, including Christians spend more money to store their “stuff” in storage units than all the money that is made in the music industry.
